My name is Maria, and I live in Santa Clara City, Cuba. My town is in the center part of Cuba. Cuba is a large island, just south of Florida.
When I was a little girl, my papi bought ice cream from a man on a wagon. The wagon was pulled by a burro (donkey), named Perico.
After cars and trucks became available, the ice cream man no longer needed Perico to pull his wagon. Instead, he sold the ice cream from a truck. As a reward to Perico for his faithful service, he let the donkey free to wander through the town.
I think Perico must have missed all the children he saw with the ice cream wagon. When he was free to roam, he started going to doors and waiting for a piece of bread. He was very friendly, and the children loved him.
Perico was very popular in Santa Clara City. When he died, the city built a statue of Perico in the center of the city. That statue is still there, making Perico one of the most famous donkeys ever!
