My name is Criostaidh, which is Gaelic for Christy. I live in a small village, called Poolewe, in the Scottish Highlands. My family are members of the Elliot clan. Every Scottish clan has its own tartan (or pattern) for material. My blue dress is made from the tartan pattern for the Elliot clan. We Scots wear our tartans with great pride -- the men wear kilts, and the women wear skirts, dresses, and scarves. Today is a big day for my family. It is the day before the big golf tournament that will be played at St. Andrews. Golf was invented in Scotland, and the St. Andrews course is very famous. I am helping my mother make a batch of black pudding that will be sold at a local pub to the tourists. Black pudding is also called blood pudding because it is made of pig blood and fat that is dried. It is a delicacy in our culture, and we like to eat it with poached eggs. The tourists seem to like it better if they don't know what is in it! After we finish making the black pudding, I will be able to go out into the cold, rainy weather with my friends. We will ride our bikes around the old castles and go down by the lochs (lakes). Maybe we'll even see the Loch Ness monster in the deep lake. For hundreds of years, people have reported seeing a REALLY big fish or snake in the lake. I'll take some extra black pudding with me just in case Nessie (the monster) likes it. Our parents tell us there is no such thing as the Loch Ness monster, but it is still fun to look!
