Reading Level: 5.90

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Corazon. Her friends called Cory, and she lived in a country called the Philippines. There are over 7000 islands in the Philippines. The Philippines had a lot of very poor people, and a few rich people. Most of the people were farmers or fishermen. The ruler’s name was Marcos, and he was a mean dictator.

Cory grew up in a nice house and went to the United States for her education. After she graduated from college, she went back to the Philippines and fell in love with a man named Benigno Aguino. They were very happy and had 5 children. Benigno was a politician. He liked to help people, and he did not like Marcos.

Marcos heard that Benigno did not like him, so he sent him to jail. Then he sent Benigno out of the Philippines and told him to never return. Cory went with her husband, and they stayed away from the country they loved for three years.

On the day they returned to the Philppines, Benigno was shot and killed at the airport.

Cory was very upset and she wanted to stay home and take care of her children. However, the people of the Philippines were tired of Marcos, the mean ruler. They asked Cory to run for President.

In 1986, Corazon Aquino was elected the first woman President of the Philippines. She served for 6 years and helped the Philippines become a democratic nation.
